Sourced from a house clearance, a beautiful old Anglo-Indian hand-cared wooden, domed stationary chest in the Arts & Crafts/Mission style. Dating back to the days of the Raj- the late 19. Century- this would have sat on a desk, keeping important correspondence such as letters home, or new sheets of writing paper and envelopes to reply to the latest dinner invitation! Carved in high relief, it is in typical Arts & Crafts style with the scrolling foliage and flowers so reminiscent of the mediaeval carvings which inspired the Movement. Theres also a nod to its Indian origins with the Paisley print motifs on the bottom front and back panels. The lid lifts off- there are no hinges. This piece is quite unusual in having the domed lid. It was produced by a skilled carver and is a very attractive piece which wouldnt look out of place in a modern setting- perhaps to keep receipts and bills now that letter-writing is a dying art!
